Employers are delaying promotions because of COVID-19

Feel like COVID-19 has played a role in you not getting a career advancement that you deserve? You’re not alone.

A reputable staffing agency, Robert Half, recently conducted a survey of 600 senior managers across Canada and found that 49% of employers had put promotions on hold due to the pandemic. Although it may be easy for employers to dismiss the potentially negative implications on staff retention by citing similar activity across other employers in the same industry, gradual effort should be made to achieve greater balance between financial cost and employee compensation.

Having worked with several job seekers who made the jump to other organizations in pursuit of career advancement opportunities throughout the course of the pandemic thus far, I would strongly advise employers to maintain viable levels of perks and career advancement/development opportunities, especially for skilled professionals. Conversely, I have also witnessed employers who have thrived throughout the pandemic, maintaining exceptional levels of employee engagement and commitment towards continuing education/professional development; it is with these desirable places of employment that I have placed many of my prospective job seekers.
