You’ve probably heard of the common piece of career advice about how it is more important to do what you love than to simply work for money; unfortunately, the second option is often tied to a job that we are not happy in. Well, this is real life and sometimes due to various reasons (for instance, needing to provide for family & loved ones, debts, geological and job market constraints) you may have to work in a job that you aren’t necessarily content with, but one that pays the bills. This is okay and might actually be your smartest move.
Assuming you have a passion or hobby that you would be happy getting paid to do, instead of quitting your job and risking everything on making a career revolving around this passion/hobby viable, start or continue doing it as a side hustle while maintaining your day job. If your passion/hobby hasn’t gained enough traction yet to grant you the financial independence that your day job provides you with, you should continue making your day job the priority (doing your job well or fulfilling all your job responsibilities to satisfactory levels, at the very least). Pursue your side hustle outside of work hours, but only to the extent that it doesn’t affect your performance in your day job; this means getting enough sleep at night which could mean less hours put into your side hustle, on top of personal commitments, but these are challenges you should embrace. No pain, no gain – the opportunity of a potentially successful venture from this side hustle (no matter how small the chances might be) should be enough to make the hard work worth it.
Within our small client base over the past several years alone, we have witnessed many success stories
- A corporate accountant filing tax returns for individuals on the side for cash and eventually owning two Liberty Tax branches after 10 years of grinding.
- A part-time Home Depot store associate and part-time Sobey’s cashier (and mother of two) studying to be a Dental Hygienist, having failed to complete Dental School 4-5 years prior. She is now an exceptional addition to a large dental office in South Winnipeg and her kids are top students in high school. The crazy thing is that we feel she isn’t quite done yet with her career progression/higher studies!
You don’t have to agree with any of the above opinions but we sincerely believe that the ideas behind such success stories should be enough to give anyone hope & belief to continue grinding.
