Growing up in Singapore, my path took a turn I hadn't anticipated when I entered military service right after high school. Like many at that age, I initially resented the two years I thought I would "waste" serving my country. Little did I know, those years would shape the core of who I am today.
The military introduced me to the rigorous life of a firefighter. The initial six months of training were grueling, pushing me both physically and mentally. Yet, it was during this time that I learned invaluable lessons in resilience and teamwork, lessons that continue to resonate in every aspect of my life.
As I transitioned to serving as a firefighting commander for the remaining 1.5 years, responding to emergencies across the city, I began to understand the true essence of service and sacrifice. Each call was a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of being prepared, both physically and mentally, to face any challenge head-on.
Looking back, I realize how my younger self had taken so much for granted. Friendships, opportunities, even the sense of purpose that comes with serving one's nation — all were underappreciated until they became memories of the past. It's a common thread in my life, only recognizing the true value of things once they are no longer within reach.
Leaving Singapore marked a significant shift in my perspective. Distance allowed me to see my homeland through a clearer lens, appreciating its strengths and unique societal values. This newfound appreciation influenced my career path and ultimately led me to establish a career consulting practice focused on helping others find purpose and alignment with their values.
The mindset and discipline instilled during my firefighting days continue to guide me through life's challenges. Whether it's navigating personal struggles, fostering meaningful relationships, or assisting clients in their career journeys, the lessons learned on those fire-stained streets remain invaluable.
Perhaps, if I had embraced leadership and positivity earlier in my firefighting career, I might have thrived in different ways. Yet, I've come to believe that everything unfolds as it should, each experience shaping us for the paths ahead.
Today, as I help clients across North America secure firefighting roles and discover their own paths to fulfillment, I am reminded of the profound impact those two years in Singapore had on my life. They were not just a chapter, but a foundation upon which I built my resilience, compassion, and dedication to service.
In the end, it's not about where we start or how we initially perceive our journey. It's about the lessons we learn along the way and how we choose to carry them forward, enriching both our lives and the lives of those we touch.
